National Nurses Week begins tomorrow, May 6 and runs through May 12. May 6 is National Nurses Day and May 12 is Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Other days during the week have significance as well and it coincides with Teacher’s Week. So we happily celebrate people who make a difference in the lives of others. Reflect Back and Reward Yourself — You Are a Nurse, You Make a Difference!
As 2013 comes to a close in the next 12 days, it’s time to reflect back on the year and find joy and rewards in the care you have given your patients. Take credit for making a difference is someone’s life. Feel honored and respected and appreciated even though there may have been few “Thank You’s” or little recognition of your efforts. This is part of being a nurse. More often than not, we don’t see our patients through to the ultimate outcome of their illness or injury. I get asked a lot about how I got started blogging and was recently interviewed by Lisette Hilton for an article in Nurse.com. It’s a great article with tips and information from several nurses who blog. It’s a good place to start for those of you who’d like to learn to blog about nursing or whatever your passion may be. Students Not Exploring Health Careers
The nursing shortage may seem stalled since the economy tanked, but as the economy recovers and health care reform becomes a reality, that shortage is going to come back with a bang and we’re going to be very ill prepared to deal with it. As new reports seem to indicate, high school students are not considering careers as nurses, doctor and other health care professionals.
